MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - A 5-year-old girl was taken to the hospital on New Year's Eve after she was hit by a stray bullet in the Raleigh-Bartlett area.

Memphis police were called to the Highland Chateau Apartments off Raleigh Lagrange Rd around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, December 31. When they arrived on the scene, they were told that a child had been shot and taken to Methodist North by her mother.

Investigators went to Methodist, where the mother told them she, her daughter and several others were upstairs when they heard several gunshots. She went outside but didn't see any suspects; when she came back in there were more shots fired, and her daughter cried out and went running into another room. The mother saw a gunshot wound on the girl's leg and rushed her to the hospital.

The girl was transferred to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, where she was last reported in stable non-critical condition.

Police say they do have information on a possible suspect, but charges have not yet been filed.
