MEMPHIS, TN (abc24.com) - Dread the DMV? Getting a driver's license in Memphis means long lines and hours spent waiting in them. The Department of Public Safety has heard the complaints, and they've just installed iPads to make your next trip take less time.
The state has spent thousands installing them at more than two dozen DMV offices, including all five of Shelby County's.
"We were waiting in line to get my driver's license renewed when they told us we could do it over here at this automatic, whatever you call it," laughs Diane Mullins with her husband, Bill.
The DMV is calling it ASSET, which stands for Automatic Self-Service Electronic Terminals.
The new self-service kiosks are equipped with iPads to let drivers renew or replace their licenses online without waiting for service.
"It's got everything there that you need to fill out and a touch screen," Diane says. "No problem."
The goal is to get drivers in and out the door within minutes, not hours.
The Mullins expected to spend all afternoon at the DMV. "We'd have been sitting over there and gone through that line then this one," Bill says. Instead they used the new kiosk.
DMV employees say the only slow down comes from people who aren't familiar with Apple technology.
"When we finally learned what we were doing it went great," Diane tells abc24.com.
"That saved us no telling how much time," Bill agrees.
"We still have our number; they were going to call us," Diane says. "They haven't called that and I'm just about through. They've already taken my picture."
You can also change your address at the kiosks. Very soon you'll be able to schedule road tests on them too.
