JACKSON, Tenn. (AP, abc24.com) - Authorities are trying to figure out how an inmate hanged himself while on suicide watch in isolation at the J. Alexander Leech Criminal Justice Complex in Madison County.

Sheriff David Woolfork said 24-year-old Jonathan Lee Carter of Huntingdon was discovered Tuesday night and pronounced dead at the jail by an assistant medical examiner, according to The Jackson Sun.

He had been placed in isolation after he threatened to kill himself earlier that day.

An aunt of Carter's told Woolfork that Carter had been a member of the Gangsters Disciples on and off since he was a teenager.

Woolfork said officials are continuing to investigate Carter's death with the help of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
