MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis police say a police officer and another person were shot at a hotel in the middle of a downtown tourist district packed for the Fourth of July holiday. A suspect is in custody.

Officers responded to a call of shots being fired around 7 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel. The officer was taken in extremely critical condition to Regional Medical Center.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. and Police Director Toney Armstrong said it appeared to begin as a domestic incident. The names of the officer and other victim have not been released, pending notification of their families.

The hotel sits at a busy intersection adjacent to the historic Peabody hotel and the Memphis Redbirds minor-league stadium, where a game was being played and fireworks were planned afterward.
