Another Violent Craigslist Sale in Memphis

Memphis Police are warning people to be careful of Craigslist. According to MPD a man was shot in broad daylight outside a McDonald's in Cordova on Sunday.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - If it sounds to good to be true, it might be dangerous. Memphis Police are warning people to be careful of Craigslist. According to MPD a man was shot in broad daylight outside a McDonald's in Cordova on Sunday. Investigators say he was meeting some people who he met on Craigslist in a cell phone deal gone bad.

This is the second Craigslist sale that turned violent in Memphis in just the last few weeks. Memphis Police are still looking for two suspects that were involved in Sunday's shooting, and now officers are urging people to be careful when they're meeting someone from Craigslist.

Police say the victim met two people at the McDonald's on Germantown Parkway near Trinity Road around 4 p.m. on Sunday. He was trying to buy a cell phone they advertised on Craigslist. Instead of getting what he thought was a good deal, police say the man was robbed and shot.

"It doesn't matter what part of the city, when there's crime there's crime," said a McDonald's customer, Carnon Travis.

"You feel kind of funny about it because you never dreamed it would happen at a McDonald's," said another customer, Elton McCommons.

On Craigslist's safety page it states, "The overwhelming majority of craigslist users are trustworthy and well-intentioned. With billions of human interactions facilitated through craigslist, the incident of violent crime has been extremely low."

That hasn't been the case in Memphis.

"I wouldn't meet anybody in a parking place," said Travis. "If they're going to give me something they're going to mail it and then they're going to mail it to the post office box that way I know I don't have to see them or hear them. Maybe somebody younger wouldn't think of something like that so I would say that person wasn't really thinking."

If you're going to buy something from Craigslist and need to meet the seller, officers suggest meeting at a police station and to never go alone.
