MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - They chase after armed criminals without hesitation and without protection.

Police K-9's are well trained but that doesn't make their job any less dangerous.

That's why an Olive Branch Boy Scout troop is raising money to buy two bulletproof vests for the canine cops at the Olive Branch Police Department.

They're putting canisters in businesses all over town, asking people to donate to the "K-9 vest fund.

"Marco is a dual purpose dog. He's a narcotics dog and apprehension with tracking," Sgt. Michael Aldridge said.

Marco is one of two police K-9's at the Olive Branch Police Department. Marco is well trained. But he's also unarmed and unprotected when chasing the bad guys.

"You never know when we send them into a building to clear it if a suspect is armed with a weapon," Aldridge said.

Boy Scout Troop 234 is on quest to protect these K-9 cops. They're holding a fundraiser and putting canisters in businesses all over town.

The K-9 Vest Fund was Jenny Wildes idea. She is a vet tech at the Olive Branch Animal Clinic and she sees the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to injured dogs.

"We do see lots of bad things that happen to dogs like getting shot and other things that aren't really good," Wildes said.

Fortunately, Olive Branch Police K-9's haven't been injured in the line of duty, but Wildes said they still need to wear the vests.

"You never know if they’re gonna be shot at or stabbed. They’re a great asset to the community. They find lost children. There's a lot of things that they do," Wildes said.

Sergeant Michael Aldridge appreciates the effort.

"It would definitely benefit them in certain situations," Aldridge said.

The canisters have been placed in about 25 businesses all over Olive Branch including vet clinics, feed stores, and a few restaurants.

The canisters will be taken up in a couple of weeks.

The scouts are trying to raise $2000 to buy 2 vests.

Anything over that amount will go to the Olive Branch Police Department's "Shop With A Cop" program.
