CORDOVA, TN (localmemphis.com)-- Darting in and out of traffic during the start of the evening rush hour, a burglary suspect led Memphis Police on a wild police chase on one of the Mid-South's busiest streets.

"I saw a car flying past me, said Lisa Akbari, "Then I saw police flying behind him and I said oh my goodness, it's a police chase."

According to MPD, an off-duty police officer was working out at the YMCA at Club Center, when he learned a man was breaking into lockers in the men's locker room.

The off-duty officer tried to talk with the suspect who fled from the scene.

Police say the officer then followed the suspect, and watched as he car-jacked a black Cadillac at the the Red Robin Restaurant at Germantown Parkway and Cordova Road around 4 p.m.

Police started chasing the Cadillac, with speeds topping 85 miles per hour. At one point, the suspect was trying to ram police cars involved in the pursuit.

"I am like stopping because I'm thinking if you don't, they're going to hit you," said Akbari. "So I stopped in the middle of the street, couldn't pull over because they were on the right side of me and the left side of me."

One squad car was hit, injuring the officer. The officer was taken to The MED in non-critical consition. A second squad car was also hit by the suspect, but the officer was not injured.

The suspect wrecked at Dexter Rd. and Chimneyrock Blvd. and was trapped in the car. Police had to wait for the fire department to get the suspect out of the car so he could be taken into custody. The suspect was eventually taken to The MED in non-critical condition.

"It was so scary," Akbari said. "I love the fact that they were protecting us and getting the bad guy, but I don't know, there's got to be something else, a better way."

There was no word Wednesday night regarding the identity of the suspect or what charges he may face.
