Robin Roberts Shares What Makes Her "Happy"

She's a Mississippi girl who's spent a lot of time in Tennessee.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - She's a Mississippi girl who's spent a lot of time in Tennessee.

Robin Roberts is a self-proclaimed southern girl at heart.

Leading Good Morning America to its highest ratings in history, she said she's happy to be on this journey.

Robin Roberts began her broadcast career in 1983 as a reporter and sports anchor just a few hours away, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

Now, more than three decades later, she said she is honored to wake America up each morning.

“I know we dance a lot and I don't even need Pharell but we dance,” Roberts said. “Oh sorry, you were saying Joy?”

Five minutes with Robin Roberts you can't help but smile.

That's exactly what she wants.

“You know what a thrill that is to look in the camera and say "Good Morning America?" To wake people up and to say we want to do whatever we can to inform you first and foremost but then help you have a good day.”

She's a rare kind of celebrity who seems as real as they come. She makes a point to remember names.

She finds something in common with everyone she talks to.

“You have a good time in Memphis, I mean I love my BBQ Rendezvous!” Roberts said.

And it is all back to making you smile.

It hasn't been an easy road for Roberts. First a very public battle with breast cancer ad then yars later, she battled a deadly form of bone marrow cancer.

It is all outlined in her new book, "Everybody's Got Something"

“What I’m so encouraged by, is the intent of the book is being received and that's to give people hope,” Roberts said. “Let people know that I went through a really difficult time but I’m here and I want to share those lessons.”

The best news in Roberts' life came on the worst days of her life.

“I think about April 19 2012, this wonderful show, we became #1 after 852 weeks. Yes we were counting and that same day I received a very dire diagnosis that I only had a year to live,” Roberts said. “That's life. It's a roller coaster and it reaffirms to me that it's important to really appreciate the journey and not get caught up in what it's going to feel like when you reach the destination.”

That's why Roberts is living for the moment.

She's at a point in her life and career where she's holding nothing back.

In December she publicly acknowledged her longtime relationship with Amber Laign, but said they have no plans to get married.

“Amber and i are extremely happy and we've been together almost 9 years now. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!” Roberts said.

We all wake up to the smile. But it's her heart that keeps viewers coming back.
