Mid-South Food Bank Seeks Help In Filling 10,000 Backpacks

Every weekend for seven years, the Mid-South food bank has provided backpacks packed with six meals for 1,500 hungry Mid-South kids.
MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Every weekend for seven years, the Mid-South food bank has provided backpacks packed with six meals for 1,500 hungry Mid-South kids.

Now while 1,500 is good. It's not nearly enough.

"We need to do 100,000 backpacks every week," Estella Mayhue-Greer of the Mid-South Food Bank said.

But for right now, the mid-south food bank will settle for 10,000.

"Our goal is to make sure we're providing as many children as possible with backpacks," Greer said.

Greer is president and CEO of the Mid-South Food Bank.

Her job is to help feed hungry Mid-Southerners, which include many school kids.

"Right here in Shelby County, 50,000 children face food insecurity," Greer said. "A hungry child can't learn and a hungry child is not going to be a productive citizen."

The Food Bank wants Mid-Southerners to help them feed children.

Greer said you can do that by sponsoring a backpack for a hungry child by giving a simple $7 donation and you're providing six nutritious meals.

“This program helps them come to school prepared to learn on Mondays because they get the food they need over the weekend," Greer said.

The food bank hopes to reach it's goal of 10,000 backpacks by December 31st.
