Orpheum Auction To Benefit New Centre For Performing Arts

The Orpheum will kick off its 85th Anniversary Celebration at the theater’s largest and most exciting fundraiser of the year: the 35th Annual Auction.
Memphis, TN: The Orpheum will kick off its 85th Anniversary Celebration at the theater’s largest and most exciting fundraiser of the year: the 35th Annual Auction. And you’ll be able to see the money you spend put to use on a stunning new project right next to the theater.

“It’s going to be phenomenal. It’s going to be a beautiful building,” said Orpheum President, Pat Halloran. He’s talking about the new Centre for Performing Arts.  Crews hope to break ground on the $15 million dollar project in January.  “It’ll be kind of like having a Harvard in Memphis, a prestigious name with prestigious activity.”

The Centre will offer classes for the performing arts to kids ages 4 through college. And it’s not just for those who see a future under the bright lights, center stage. Halloran says there will be a variety of classes for students including how to raise money, edit film and write commercials.

Halloran knows first-hand how incredible the world of theater can be for a child. He’s seen them take in the beauty of The Orpheum for the last 33 years.  “I can’t tell you how many times I get choked up when I’m standing over that stairway and 2,000 kids come in and their eyes are like that big, and they walk in here and look at that chandelier.  And then when they sit down in the theater and they see something live on the stage instead of in a little TV screen, they’re just amazed.”

Soon, kids will have a new place to learn how to become a part of that magic in a shiny new building next door. “We want this to be a futuristic kind of symbol. This new building is going to have a life of its own and I think it’s going to be increasingly important to people,” said Halloran.  It will take crews about a year to build the new Centre for Performing Arts.  The Orpheum still has about $5 million to raise to make it happen. You can help by attending the Auction on November 16th. Tickets are $125 a person. Click here to get yours.
