Deputy Sheriff Jason Allen has been employed at the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office since 24 May 2013. He is assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division.

Deputy Sheriff Demario Avery has been employed at the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office since 16 December 2005. He is assigned to the Uniform Patrol Division and a member of the SWAT Team.

Investigator Brandon Williams has been employed at the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office since 03 December 2001. He is assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division as a Narcotics investigator.

“I have placed Deputy Allen, Deputy Avery and Inv Williams on Administrative Leave which is protocol to assure they are provided any resources or support after being involved in a critical incident and to be available for agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as they conduct their investigation,” Sheriff J.T. ‘Pancho’ Chumley said.

At approximately 5:00 pm on 26 October 2013 Tipton County Sheriff’s Office deputies had checked out at 245 Watkins Road in Drummonds regarding a probation compliance investigation concerning Gerald Day Murphy, 60 who resides at the Drummonds home. Deputies made contact with Gerald Murphy near a shed beside the home and as they were entering the home, Jake Ramsey Maese-Murphy, 26 came from the back of the residence.

Jake was armed with a knife and confronted deputies. Deputies tasered Jake who then pulled the probes out and fled to the rear of the residence. Jake returned to the front of the house screaming he had a gun. When confronted again by Jake, deputies fatally shot him.

The Criminal Investigation Division responded to the scene for processing. As protocol, the Sheriff’s Office notified the District Attorney’s Office and requested the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to investigate the shooting. Agents and Investigators responded to the scene.

During the incident the four deputies and two witnesses were not injuried. Deputies had recovered a large quantity of marijuana in a vehicle at the residence and several marijuana plants that were growing near the shed beside the residence. Gerald Murphy was taken into custody at the scene for Manufacturing of Marijuana.

“This is an example of the dangers our deputies face on a daily basis. Thankfully our deputies and the other civilians at the scene were not injuried in this unfortunate incident. The deputies will be placed on Administrative Leave as protocol when involved in a deadly force investigation,” Chumley said.
