Anchor and Managing Editor

Richard Ransom is Weeknight Anchor and Managing Editor for ABC24 News, joining the team in September, 2017.  He brings more than 25 years experience reporting on the issues and people affecting Memphis and the Mid-South. The Emmy Award-winning journalist wants you to know he and his family chose to live in the Memphis area not once, but twice.

“We didn’t grow up here, we have no relatives here and we even moved away for awhile. But the people brought us back.” He added, “Memphis is home.”

Richard grew up in Denver and graduated from the University of Missouri which included an internship for ABC News in London. He started his career in Peoria, Illinois before going to Jacksonville, FL and then moved to Memphis (for the first time) where he was a morning news anchor. Seven years and two children later, the Ransoms moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Richard worked as weeknight anchor. But when an opportunity as main Anchor in Memphis opened up, Richard says it was a no-brainer to head back to The Bluff City. “We missed the warmer climate, but what we really missed was the warmth of the people,” he said.

“Every day, I can’t wait to get to work,” Richard said. “I work for good people who understand it’s not a responsible or accurate reflection of life in Memphis to go racing around town chasing crime scenes. There's a real commitment at ABC24 to bringing our viewers news the way it should be.”

On Sundays, Richard hosts "ABC24 This Week” — a program which gives context to the week’s headlines using the expertise of other local journalists and newsmakers.

Richard is the winner of numerous Regional Emmy and Associated Press awards from breaking news to best newscast. During his career, he interviewed President Barack Obama in a one-on-one White House interview, covered the Memphis Tigers at the Final Four in San Antonio and covered the funeral of former president Ronald Reagan - not to mention national political conventions and hurricanes.

Richard and his wife have two grown children.
