MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – I hate joke candidates. They justlove to get a little free publicity.
See, I happen to take electionsseriously.
So I don’t want to see a guywearing a wig and goggles talking about how he would like to make Memphis morelike Planet Zambodia. And I really don’t want to see a guy who vandalized aConfederate statue, and later, in court, said it was his alter ego.
I especially don’t want to hearfrom them in debates.
Let’s talk about the MemphisMayor’s race.
You know, and I know, that thethree top candidates are incumbent Mayor Jim Strickland, former Mayor WillieHerenton, and Shelby County Commissioner Tami Sawyer.
The others are living a pipe dream, and I don’t want to hear them taking up time on a debate.
I want to hear from the people whostand a reasonable chance of being elected.
I would love to see the threemayoral candidates debate. I don’t think it’s going to happen, however.
Years ago, after a debate in oneof his campaigns, former Mayor Willie Herenton vowed he would never do anotherone again. He was with the real candidates, the fringe candidates, and theyfired shots at him all night.
It’s the same way that the recentDemocrat Presidential Candidate debates have been.
You will not remember a thing aboutwhat Senator Tulsi Gabbard said, not a thing uttered from New York City MayorBill De Blasio.
In another few months, they willbe footnotes, obscure answers in trivia games.
They’re just taking up space.
So I hope to see Strickland,Herenton, and Sawyer debate.
I’m not holding my breath.
Maybe someday they’ll have adebate on who will be the next Prince of Zambodia.
