Shelby County lost more than 2,000 jobs in the first half of 2019.
This is according to WARN Act data Local 24 News obtained from Tennessee’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
“The dataincludes all WARN notices submitted to the state by companies following thelaw,” said Chris Cannon, a spokesperson for the department.
WARN, the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, is a federal law, that according to the Tennessee Department of Workforce Development, protects workers, their families, and communities by requiring employers to provide notice 60 days in advance of plant closings, mass layoffs and/or sale of a business.
Based on state law, companies are required to notify the Department of Workforce Development, which triggers a WARN notice requirement, if a company has 50 or more full-time employees laid off if they constitute one-third or more of the full-time employees at the site, or 500 or more full-time employees.
From January 1 to June 30, data obtained by Local 24 News showed there were more than 2,700 announced layoffs in Shelby county, more than other county in the state.
