MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – It was special honor Wednesday for the founder of the Greater Community Temple COGIC, Bishop Willie L. Porter.

The Alder Building in the heart of downtown Memphis has been renamed after the founding pastor on the 10-year anniversary of his death. The building sits on South Main and serves as an upscale apartment building.

Bishop Willie L. Porter led the Tennessee Central COGIC jurisdiction three decades before handing the reins over to his son, Bishop Brandon Porter.

The elder bishop is known for helping coordinate Martin Luther King Jr.’s visit to Mason Temple, the place of King’s final speech the night before his assassination.
