Memphis, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – It may be a little chillyoutside. But that cool weather, a kayak, and a paddle is just what thedoctor ordered for some local veterans. Local 24 News Weeknight Anchor KatinaRankin has this local good news.
Grab your paddle, hop in the kayak, and let’s take a few lapsaround Shelby Farms. It’s just what the doctor ordered for theseveterans. We met up with them on a cool, windy Tuesday morning.
“The main thing is just be out here and enjoy it. You’re notin a race to do anything. You’re not in a hurry to be anywhere. You’re outenjoying yourself, and it’s wonderful,” said NavyVeteran Peter Geldard.
Peterserved 6 years in the Navy.
“Serving my country was a great honor, the comrade betweenyour shipmates or your fellow soldiers, why not? Can’t beat it,”said Geldard.
After a rough patch in his life, he decided he needed a littlehelp. And one of Memphis’ VA Recreational Programs, kayaking, helped himwade through those difficult times.
“I was having some personal issues. My wife had diedunexpectedly, and I heard about these programs that they offer, and it soundedright. And, I’ve got a lot out of it,” said Geldard.
He found peace in the storm on the water.
“Just relaxing, taking it all in, watching nature,” saidGeldard.
And he recommends the program for any veteran.
“It’s therapeutic. It’s relaxing, and we get to trade a fewsea stories and stories with other vets, comrade without being in theservice,” said Geldard.
