MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Civil rightsicon and former United Nations Ambassador AndrewYoung talked business Wednesday as he joined city leaders for the “We MeanBusiness” symposium at the Universal Life building.
Young is asupporter of economic empowerment nationwide. He is known for helping add moreminority and women-owned businesses during his time in office from 1982 to 1990.
Young said Memphisis in one of the best positions in the nation when it comes to business.
“40%of our trade nationally goes down the Mississippi, so when we get theMississippi fixed right, Memphis is very well poised. Luckily, you’re on theupside of the river,” said Young.
Youngwas an early leader in the civil rights movement. He served as executivedirector of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He was also a closefriend of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
