Waffle House celebrates 65 years in business

If all of Georgia can agree on one thing and only one thing, it's that Waffle House deserves a very happy birthday.

ATLANTA — Waffle House celebrated its 65th birthday on Saturday, marking a momentous milestone for what might be Georgia's most universally beloved institution.

The legendarily reliable diner chain served its first waffle on Sept. 5, 1955 at its first location in Avondale Estates. And since then they've served - well, there's no official count, but it's a lot of waffles.

"On this day in 1955, two neighbors, Joe Rogers, Sr. and Tom Forkner decided that Avondale Estates, GA needed a 24-hour restaurant," Waffle House tweeted. "65 years and over 1900 locations later, we want to celebrate that with YOU for National #WaffleWeek! Watch for ways to WIN Waffle House® Gift Cards!"

Scores of fans wished Waffle House happy birthday on Twitter.

"Happiest of Happy Birthdays to @WaffleHouse!! The world needs the glow of your perfect yellow signs and we all need more hash browns in our lives!" one user wrote.

Even the Peach State's highest officials expressed their devotion to Waffle House.

"With thousands of restaurants scattered across the country, Waffle House has been serving great food and southern hospitality for 65 years," Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on Twitter. "Happy birthday, @WaffleHouse! We’re proud you call Georgia home!"

State Attorney General Chris Carr added: "I cannot adequately express in words how grateful I am for that day in 1955. Happy Birthday @WaffleHouse! #scatteredsmotheredandcovered"

It's probably safe to say everyone in Georgia hopes Waffle House enjoys another 65 happy, healthy, open-at-every-hour years.
