Unemployment claims in Tennessee continue to rise in record numbers.
Last week, with businesses closed or minimized because of the coronavirus pandemic, 112,438 new unemployment claims were filed in the state, shattering the previous week's record of 94,492.
Just three weeks ago, only 2,702 claims were filed.
According to data from the U.S. Department of Labor, it's the state's largest number of new claims in a single week. The closest record before the coronavirus pandemic was set nearly thirty years ago; 52,529 claims were filed the week ending on Jan. 11,1992.
The most claims filed during any given week during the last recession was 30,914.
Nationally, 6.6 million more Americans filed for unemployment last week. The new numbers mean roughly one in 10 workers have lost their jobs in just the past three weeks.
