Police say a taser was used on a young girl at a Cincinnati Kroger Monday evening.

WDTN news’ partner WLWT reports that Cincinnati police said the incident happened around 9:30 p.m. Monday at the store on Kenard Avenue.

The 11-year-old girl was contacted by police who suspected her of shoplifting a backpack full of food.

According to officers, the girl resisted arrest and attempted to flee before they deployed the taser.

A Lieutenant with the Cincinnati Police Department says they are allowed to use a taser on anyone who is at least seven years old.

The child has been charged with theft and obstruction of justice.

She was taken to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital after the incident and was then released to a guardian.

The responding officer tried to turn on his body camera, but it did not turn on right away, said police.

A taser report is expected to be completed and released once it has been reviewed by the District 5 commander.
