(SHELBY COUNTY D.A. NEWS RELEASE) – A 22-year-old man has been indictedon first-degree murder charges in the unprovoked stabbing death of a Raleighman earlier this year at a drive-in fast-food restaurant, said Shelby CountyDist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.
Defendant Markell Austin is being held without bond in the ShelbyCounty Jail.
Police said that around 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 this year, Austinapproached Cortez Brown outside the Sonic Drive-In at 3540 Covington Pike andstabbed him repeatedly. Brown, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Austin was taken into custody nearby a short time later, and thebloody knife was recovered.
The case is being handled by the DA’s Crime Strategies ProsecutionUnit which incorporates and expands the work of the Multi-Agency Gang Unit, theOrganized Crime Unit, Project Safe Neighborhood/Gundone, GunStat, the SafeStreets Task Force and the Violent Crime Unit.
