Shelby County Sheriff's Office identifies man they say shot himself during Cordova barricade

The barricade began when Shelby County Sheriff's deputies went to a home to issue a search warrant.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff's Office has identified a man they said shot himself during a barricade situation in Cordova.

The SCSO said the fugitive apprehension team and U.S. Marshals were serving a murder warrant for Joe Wilhite, 36, just before 2 a.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of Hidden Ride Lane.

When they got to the scene, deputies said they heard a gunshot from inside the house. SWAT and negotiators were called to the scene.

Deputies entered the home around 4 a.m. and found Wilhite dead. They said no one else was in the house at the time.

Investigators said preliminary information indicates Wilhite shot himself. 

The case remains under investigation.
