The TBI identified the inmate as Gershun Freeman, 33. Freeman's cause of death hasn't been released.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An inmate died while in the custody of the Shelby County Sheriff's Office at the Shelby County jail Wednesday evening, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation

The TBI was called in to investigate the inmate's death at 201 Poplar at the request of Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy.

"The District Attorney's office is aware of the death that occurred in the Shelby County jail Wednesday evening and has called Tennessee Bureau of Investigations to investigate. The investigation is ongoing and we have no further details at this time," Mulroy said.

The TBI identified the deceased inmate as Gershun Freeman, 33. Freeman's cause of death hasn't been released.

Freeman's family is demanding answers from local leaders.

They said they received a call early Thursday morning that Freeman was involved in a fight, but they had to call the morgue themselves to confirm his death.

Freeman's father is asking Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner and Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris for transparency during this investigation.
