Cancer affects us all, and students at a north Memphis high school are working hard during their Senior Service Day to help the American Cancer Society help others.

The organization’s big kick-off started Thursday.

About a dozen teens moved like a well-oiled machine to help organizers get ready.

The students cut, folded and stuffed packets that will be used by ACS team leaders to help fundraising and spreading the message about the Making Strides season.

The reason these Kipp High School seniors are here is not just for serving their community, and not just for the working together.

For many of them, it’s personal.

“Both of my grandmothers had cancer,” said Dalia Hernandez, a senior at KMCH. “One had her breast removed.”

“I had an uncle with lung cancer, he didn’t survive,” said Creona Bowman, a senior at KMCH. “My mom’s best friend recently found out she had breast cancer.”

As for the lessons students are learning from their day of service: “I would hope that there is more awareness that cancer touches everything, and that all the smallest things have the biggest impact.” ” said Ashley Jackson, a KMCH teacher.
