MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Four Shelby County schools have been named to the 2019 list of “America’s Healthiest Schools,” by the Alliance fora Healthier Generation.

The list looks at how schools work to ensure students are healthy- including “serving healthier meals and snacks, getting students moving more, offering high-quality health and physical education, and empowering school leaders to become healthy role models.”

Below are the SCS schools listed by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, and special things each school does, according to the group.

Brownsville Road Elementary School

  • Ensures families have opportunities to be involved in the decision-making process for health and safety policies and programs
  • Promotes healthy food and beverage choices and school meals with creative marketing techniques
  • Provides at least 60 minutes of physical education per week for students
  • Implements a robust health and physical education program

Dexter Elementary School

  • Partners with local community organizations to engage students and their families in health-promotion activities
  • Prohibits withholding recess as punishment
  • Has a representative school health committee that meets at least four times a year and oversees school health and safety policies and programs

Germanshire Elementary School

  • Provides at least 20 minutes of recess per day for students, with teachers or recess monitors encouraging students to be active
  • Offers health free or low-cost health assessments for staff at least once a year
  • Ensures families have opportunities to be involved in the decision-making process for health and safety policies and programs

Grahamwood Elementary School

  • Implements “farm to school” activities to promote understanding of and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Offers a variety of after school activity options such as: cross country, basketball, soccer, cheerleading, roller skating, and more!
  • Encourage employees to partake in afterschool physical activities with students

16 Tennessee schools made this year’s list. NoArkansas or Mississippi schools made the list.

All of America’s Healthiest Schools:

  • Meet or exceed federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks 
  • Offer breakfast daily
  • Incorporate physical activity before, during or after the school day
  • Implement district wellness policies and update progress annually
  • Involve parents and community members in decision-making
