Shelby County Schools want to make sure that students are getting the emotional support they need this school year.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Shelby County Schools want to make sure that students are gettingthe emotional support they need this school year.

Wednesday was the ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening of thetrauma-informed center at Geeter K-8 School.

Studies show that students can’t focus in schools because ofsocial-emotional issues in their lives. Students are helped based on absences, troubles at home, and more possible problems, in an effort to help focus in onthose students’ health.

“We definitely want to be the model.Social-emotional learning and awareness and combatting aces is our work,” said EricHarris, Principal of Geeter K-8 School. “We spend a whole lot of time trying tofigure out how to reach students and try to get them to perform, but we don’tput the work in trying to figure out where’s their mind right now. Why is itthat they’re not retaining this knowledge instead of continually throwing newknowledge at them.”

Social-emotional learning is one of the district’s toppriorities as part of efforts to develop a more supportive district forstudents.
