MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – A Whitehaven High School math teacher is adding $25,000 to his bank account for his exceptional work in the classroom.
Nathan Kirsch was surprised with the Milken Educator Award Wednesday. The award is considered the “Oscars of teaching,” recognizing educators from around the United States who are furthering excellence in education.
Kirsch’s students have scored in the 99th percentile on state exams and raised pass rates on advanced placement exams by 83%.
“There are so many teachers in Tennessee, so many great teachers that it’s hard to, I don’t know, it’s hard to put it into words. Yeah, there’s…it’s just humbling,” Kirsch said.
He was chosen from among 40 educators nationwide for the honor. The $25,000 award can be used however he pleases.
