MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – This week is Folic Acid Awareness Week. Experts say it’s essential for women of child-bearing age to get their daily dose.
Our bodies use folic acid to make new cells. The CDC urges womento take 400 micrograms every day, starting at least one month before gettingpregnant. It can help prevent major birth defects of the baby’s brain andspine.
“The most common defects that are found is spinabifida,” said Maggie Dibble, Assistant Nurse Manager of the NICU at St FrancisHospital, “… where the baby won’t be able to walk – baby not able to walk,blindness, incontinence, or even death. And the other one is anencephaly, wherebaby is missing part of skull.”
Nutritionists say dark, leafy greens like spinach arehigh in folic acid. But health experts say the easiest way to get your folicacid is a daily multi-vitamin.
