MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – In local education, meet Mako. Students saw firsthand how robots can be used to improve lives. Saint Francis-Memphis is the only hospital in the area boasting this technology used to replace knees and hips.

Students from the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering got a hands-on demonstration. Mako allows surgeons to virtually modify the surgical plan during surgery, allowing doctors to see around the bone in ways they couldn’t before. It also means shorter recovery time for patients.

“I find it to be an enlightening experience to see how technology is used in the medical field,” said Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering senior Brian Cartwright.

“These are the people that are going to be making advances to technology in the future, and the more exposure they have earlier to what’s currently out there, the better chance they have making advances that would better our society,” said orthopedic surgeon Dr. Peter Lindy.

Saint Francis Hospital recently performed its 1,000th Mako procedure.
