MEMPHIS – A 16-year-old youth was indicted Thursday on first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder charges stemming from a drive-by shooting last Spring near Vance and Danny Thomas, said Shelby County Dist. Atty. Gen. Amy Weirich.

Yamar Calvin is accused of firing into a crowd of teens at around 11 p.m. on April 24 at Foote Homes, killing 15-year-old Amberya Davis with a shot in the back and slightly wounding another teen.

Calvin, also 15 at the time, was arrested two days later. He also was indicted on employment of a firearm in the commission of a dangerous felony. The shooting was the result of an ongoing dispute involving a number of teens.

The case is being handled by Asst. Dist. Atty. Colin Campbell of the DA’s Multi-Agency Gang Prosecution Unit that handles homicide cases and other violent crimes associated with gang activity.

The unit works daily with the MGU Operations team, using local, state and federal laws to hold offenders accountable.

Campbell also is head of the DA’s Crime Strategies, seeking new and innovative means to combat crime.
