The 11th annual Tennessee Pork Report from the Beacon Center has been released. It says in the past year, state and local government officials squandered $480 million in taxpayer money.

The Beacon Center says examples of waste in Memphis include:

  • $200,000 for the Memphis Zoo
  • $65,000 to fund trips for Memphis City Council members, up 300% from the previous year
  • $8,000 a year for food for Memphis City Council members

For the 2nd year, the Beacon Center took votes for the “Pork of the Year” award. This year, that recognition went to the University of Tennessee’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion, which encouraged students and faculty to use gender-neutral pronouns such as “ze” and “zir,” instead of “he” and “she.” The office also tried to ensure holiday parties on the UT Knoxville campus were not “Christmas parties in disguise.”
