$70 million renovation underway at 201 Poplar, Walter Bailey Criminal Justice Center

A renovation of what might be the busiest building in downtown Memphis is finally starting to show results.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – A renovation of what might be the busiest building in downtown Memphis is finally starting to show results.

201 Poplar, which is now officially named the Walter Bailey Criminal Justice Center, is getting a $70-million face lift.

The building, once known as the glamour slammer, is close to 50-years-old, and recently there have been serious security problems at the facility.

The 12-story building will also be one of the most complicated renovations done, as you can’t shut down courtrooms or the other offices.

A big move is days away.

“The attorney general’s 11th floor is complete. She’ll be moving around the first of May. We are in the process of awarding a moving contract right now to make that happen,” said Shelby County Public Works Director Tom Needham about the district attorney’s office.

The entire renovation will not be finished until 2027.
