A University of Mississippi law student has started a petition to get the Department of Justice to re-open the Emmett Till case.
Laura Cooper says, “In solidarity with the Mississippi Workers’ Center for Human Rights and the Rebellious Lawyering Conference, I started an online version for the petition ‘United States Department of Justice: Calling For The Reopening of the Emmett Till Murder Case'” on change dot org.
The petition comes fresh off the heels of a rally by community activist Duvalier Malone at the State Capitol in Jackson, MS asking the Mississippi Attorney General and the Department of Justice to re-open the case.
Till is the 14-year-old boy who traveled from Chicago to Money, Mississippi to visit his family.
While there, he whistled at a woman, Carolyn Bryant. That whistle led to Till’s death. Bryant recently admitted to lying about Till making sexual advancements towards her.
