The family of the man who was shot last month by Memphis police is now represented by a new attorney.
The officer-involved shooting of Martavious Banks led to the suspension of three Memphis police officers and investigations; one internal and one by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations.
The high-powered law firm out of Baltimore, Maryland, Murphy Falcon Murphy is now representing the Banks family. The firm may be familiar because it represented Freddie Gray’s family. He’s the young man who was arrested and died while in police custody in Baltimore.
As for the Banks family, they have spent a lot of time here at Regional One Hospital since the shooting of the 25-year old. He was shot following a traffic stop near Elvis Presley Blvd. in Whitehaven on September 17th.
MPD officers on the scene claim he tried fleeing the scene and believed he had a gun.
Since the shooting, it’s come to light three officers either didn’t’ have their body/dash cams on or disengaged them.
Thursday, for the first time, we received an update on Martavious Banks, who up until this point remained in critical condition
“He is able articulate what he remembers, and I’ll be brief, that is the other part of the good news. He got shot twice in the back as he was going into the house,” says attorney Billy Murphy.
The Banks family didn’t address the media, speaking only through that attorney.
Local 24 did ask if a lawsuit or formal paperwork was filed regarding this shooting, but the lawyer would not comment.
