Bordered by Summer Avenue and Sam Cooper on the North and South, and Hollywood and Tillman on the West and East, The Broad Avenue district of Binghampton is a vibrant stretch of shops, restaurants, and local businesses in the heart of Memphis. For 10 years the Historic Broad Avenue Arts Alliance has worked to promote the creation and exhibition of art in the neighborhood, while fostering a creative environment and community amongst the neighborhood’s businesses and residents.

“Thanks to the unbelievable support from Memphians, Broad Avenue’s redevelopment continues to soar” explained Pat Brown, co-owner of Broad Avenue’s T Clifton Art. The success of the organization and the neighborhood has led the Broad Avenue Arts Alliance to hire their first Executive Director, Katie McWeeney Powell. “This is a significant milestone for Broad Avenue,” said Brown.“

“The members of the Historic Broad Avenue Arts Alliance made a courageous and inspiring move last week by hiring Katie McWeeney Powell as the street’s first Executive Director” said Paul West, President of the Alliance. “It is this kind of vision and commitment that has allowed Broad Avenue to grow and blossom into the success story it has become. Katie brings a wealth of talents to this new position. I believe her most important attributes are her passion for people and belief in the power of relationships. It is this passion and the love for this community that will enable Broad to increase its presence in the Binghampton community and to continue to be an incubator of ideas and dreamers,” said West.

“The opportunities for the organization to further showcase the power of the arts will greatly expand with the dedicated, full-time leadership of Katie McWeeney Powell,” said Brown. “In particular, we can now concentrate more effort towards further partnering with our greater Binghampton neighborhood. Katie has been a pivotal volunteer for many Broad Avenue events. Her passion for Broad Avenue, Binghampton and Memphis, coupled with her education and past work experience is the ideal fit for us. ”

McWeeney Powell received her BFA from Louisiana Tech University and her MFA from Memphis College of Art. Aside from her education, she has extensive experience with local arts organizations including Indie Memphis and Crosstown Arts. “From group art critics in college to organizing successful events for thousands of people, I believe my creative problem-solving experience is what this organization needs to move into the future,” explained McWeeney Powell. Beyond her arts experience, Katie is an accomplished entrepreneur as co-founder of her and her husband’s business, Fine Line Car Care Company and in working with consulting clients such as Lokion  and Celtic Crossing to gain a thorough understanding of marketing, development and mindful, successful growth.

With this being the first full-time position for the organization, my goal is to lay a strong foundation by creating strong and meaningful relationships with the residents, business owners, property owners, developers and community stakeholders” said McWeeney Powell. “Broad Avenue Arts District needs a key person to establish a common vision and a collective voice for the future; I’m thrilled to have this opportunity.”
