A Memphis mother is facing criminal charges after her 12-year-old daughter was shot Tuesday morning in what investigators described as an accidental shooting.
Memphis Police arrested 33-year-old Katrena Blackshire after the shooting that took place around outside Greenbriar Apartments on Madewell Street Tuesday morning. Investigators have charged Blackshire with aggravated child abuse and criminally negligent homicide. A 13-year-old boy, identified by police as her son, was charged with reckless homicide.
Local 24 has learned Blackshire’s daughter was waiting in her mother’s car for a bus to take her to summer camp. She was inside the vehicle with her brother when a fight reportedly broke out between them and a gun went off.
“This is far too much of an incident in the communities that we serve, and we are very saddened,” said Ephie Johnson, President and CEO of Neighborhood Christian Centers. “Much of what we do in our camps every day is talk about conflict resolution, treating each other right.”
Neighbors and friend have identified the child as Katrena Blackshire’s daughter Tatiyana. She was originally rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition but later died from her injuries.
“Tatiyana was in our programs that the Neighborhood Christian Centers has,” said Hattie Porter with Neighborhood Christian Centers.
Porter identified herself as Katrena’s godmother, adding she too was part of the same program her children participated in.
“We raised her,” she said. “She was one of our kids that we mentored down through the years in the Neighborhood Christian Centers programs.”
According to a police report, Blackshire told police she knowingly left her children in the vehicle with a loaded handgun in the center console.
Blackshire is due in court for her initial court appearance Wednesday morning at 9:00 a.m.
