Trustees of the state College Board unanimously voted to strip Ed Meek’s name from the Meek School of Journalism and New Media at the University of Mississippi. The academic unit is now known just as the School of Journalism and New Media.

Meek requested his name be removed days after posting photos on his Facebook page. The photos displayed two African-American women in short dresses, as the accompanying post discussed problems that would threaten the economy in Oxford.

The post went viral on social media, causing backlash and controversy from across the country. Both women were Ole Miss students and considered the post offensive.

The school has been named for Meek since he and his wife donated $5.3 million in 2009.
