Ed Rice Community Center Temporarily Closed

Ed Rice Community Center in Frayser is closing until further notice pending the results of testing that followed recent complaints from citizens concerned about potential allergens and water leaks at the facility.

The Division of Parks and Neighborhoods hired an environmental consultant to assess the situation and recommend steps to remediate it. Samples have been taken and a lab report is pending.

Ed Rice Community Center is located at 2907 North Watkins Street. Nearby community centers include North Frayser Community Center, 3.2 miles away at 2555 St. Elmo Avenue; and Kate Sexton Community Center, also 3.2 miles away at 1235 Brown Avenue.

In the current year’s capital improvement budget, Mayor Jim Strickland and the Memphis City Council approved $960,000 to design a replacement for Ed Rice Community Center, which was built in the mid-1960s.
