African-American Read-In

The first African-American Read-In was held today at the Whitehaven library.

The purpose of the read-in was to introduce the community to local African-American authors and children’s books.

The event is endorsed by the International Library Association.

Organizer Stacy Ladonna says it’s important for people of color to see themselves on the cover of and inside books.

Local Memphis 24 anchor Katina Rankin kicked off the event as a guest reader reading her book: “Up North, Down South: City Folk Meet Country Folk. She also talked about the importance of reading.

More than twenty authors of stories and poems participated in the event.
