Former Millington Police Officer & Part-Time Shelby County Deputy Killed In Motorcycle Crash Sunday

Millington Police say a former Millington police officer and part-time Shelby County Deputy was killed Sunday in a crash involving a motorcycle.

Millington Police say a former Millington police officer and part-time Shelby County Deputy was killed Sunday in a crash involving a motorcycle.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at Cube Millington Road near Highway 51 in Millington about 12:30 p.m. Sunday. They say Millington resident Sgt. William “Bill” Merchant was riding his motorcycle when he was involved in a crash. He was taken to Regional One, where he later died.

From Millington PD:

Sergeant Merchant was 67 years old and served with the Millington Police Department for 20 years retiring in May 2017. He was also retired from the United States Navy prior to joining the Millington Police Department.  This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Millington Police Department. Charges against the driver of the other vehicle are pending.   

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death. They released this statement:

Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham is sadden to report the death of part-time Shelby County Deputy William Merchant. Merchant was Retired from the Millington Police Department and worked in the Fugitive Division with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. He died after being critically injured in an accident involving his motorcycle and another vehicle near Cuba Millington and Highway 51. He was transported to Regional One in critical condition and was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived.

Sheriff Oldham joins the entire Shelby County Sheriff’s Department in sending our thoughts and prayers out to the family and friends of Deputy Merchant.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Millington Police Department.
