Free summer camp offered by Memphis Police

Memphis Police are also doing their part to keep kids out of trouble with a free summer camp for struggling families.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) Memphis Police are also doing their part to keep kids out of trouble with a free summer camp for struggling families.

Organizers point to studies that show 70% of kids stay home alone during the summer because their parents can’t afford otherwise.

Due to overwhelming demand from last year’s first event, the Raines precinct has once again partnered with Dominion Church to touch the lives the children who participate. For 8 weeks, officers teach the kids about building character, preventing crime, and promoting success.

We want to make sure that our young people are doing something positive. To be quite honest, we are losing so many of our young people, and we need to have something in place that can steer the children in the right direction and become a positive individual in our society, said Ike Griffith, Memphis Youth Services Director.

Griffith adds some of the teens hired will continue those jobs after the six-week program ends.
