In Hickory Hill, a new multi-million-dollar purchase by a charter school operator marks the beginning of a three-year revitalization project for that part of town.
Gestalt Community Schools is buying out the Mendenhall Square Shopping Center. It currently houses the Power Center Academy High School, and now the elementary school will be relocated there.
Organizers say next steps include possible openings of a community daycare and fresh produce market, along with a complete reconfiguration of the high school.
A groundbreaking ceremony is set for this fall.
