DeSoto County Elections

State-wide Mississippi municipal primaries are one week from Tuesday. In DeSoto County, there are a couple of races that are getting attention. Mayoral races in Southaven and Hernando have been hot topics!

Don’t forget to bring your photo ID, like a driver’s license, to the polls. You’ll need it to vote.

There is no opposition for mayoral races in Olive Branch and Walls, so the current mayors will be sworn in to serve another term. It’s a different story for Southaven, Hernando, and Horn Lake.

Incumbent Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite will face two opponents in the primary election. Fellow Republican challengers Tommy Henley and James Weifenbach.

Weifenbach is a former DeSoto County Sheriff candidate.

Musselwhite said he’s most proud of bringing back Southaven’s good reputation and improving the city’s financial strength.

In Hernando, Republican Mayor Chip Johnson is seeking re-election. His opponent is fellow Republican N. C. “Tom” Ferguson Jr.

Johnson said he’s most proud of helping create the city’s first-ever parks department and putting Hernando on a pedestal as one of the country’s top 10 cities to raise a family.

In Horn Lake, incumbent Mayor Allen Latimer will go against Republican challenger Michael Guice.

Olive Branch Mayor Scott Phillips and Walls Mayor Patti Denison are unopposed in their bids for re-election.

The primary election is May 2nd. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

If there’s a need for a runoff, it’ll be held May 16th. The general election is June 6th.

You must register to vote 30 days before an election.

To vote in the general election, you must register by May 6th.
