IP Donates To Teacher Toolbox

International Paper (NYSE: IP) today donated $10,000 worth of feminine care products to address a critical need in Shelby County Schools (SCS) – truancy among female students who lack access to basic feminine care and hygiene products.

Employees from the company’s Global Cellulose Fibers segment, which makes the pulp for diapers, tissue and other personal hygiene products that promote health and wellness, today packed feminine hygiene necessity kits, which will be delivered to 100 SCS schools, with replenishment supplies to be stocked at the SCS Teacher Toolbox.

SCS serves over 100,000 students in more than 200 schools with young girls comprising over half of the student population. Chronically absent is defined by SCS as missing 18 days over the course of a school year. There is a critical need to lower the number of young women who are chronically absent and IP hopes to contribute to lowering the rate through this contribution.

Health and wellness, especially related to children, is one of International Paper’s community engagement signature causes.

”We are committed to addressing critical needs in the communities where our employees live and work,” said Cathy Slater, Senior Vice President, Global Cellulose Fibers and IP Asia, International Paper. “We were delighted to be able to provide this donation, complemented by our volunteers’ hard work, to help young girls receive access to the basic hygiene needs that will enable them to attend school regularly.”

“Having a drive like this, having people contribute to our cause and making sure that every school is equipped will not only help reduce the rates of chronic absenteeism, but also getting our young ladies what they need so they can focus on academic achievement,” said Dr. Lori Phillips, Director of Family & Community Engagement, Shelby County Schools.

International Paper’s feminine hygiene necessity kits, packaged in the company’s own corrugated boxes, will be available in “safe spaces” throughout 100 SCS schools and stocked at the SCS Teacher Toolbox, located at the Board of Education. The SCS Teacher Toolbox is managed by SchoolSeed, a local non-profit organization aimed at improving the quality of K-12 education in the Greater Memphis community.
