#3Heroes: Willoughby-Eastlake community donates thousands of food items for families in need

Staff from Thomas Jefferson Elementary started the food drive as an effort to help W-E students and families during the time away from the classroom.

EASTLAKE, Ohio — It’s easy to feel isolated in a time like this, which is why the support of a community can make all of the difference.

The staff in the Willoughby-Eastlake City School District know all too well how much students and families rely on their programs to get by. Last week, teachers at Thomas Jefferson Elementary worked together to organize a food drive to provide students and their families with food during Governor DeWine’s shutdown of schools.

After a first drive last week saw huge success, the school district came together with the help of the community to bring in thousands of items on Monday that will be distributed to local families who need assistance during this time.

“This food drive has truly been a community effort. Our staff members have stepped forward to help, along with local families, churches, booster organizations and our own parent teacher organizations. They have been presented with an unprecedented event and continue to help one another at every turn. I am proud to be a part of the Willoughby-Eastlake community” said W-E Schools Superintendent, Steve Thompson.

The school district is hoping to provide enough meals for some 300 families during this shutdown.
