Local 24 helps a local school brighten up its classrooms

MEMPHIS, Tenn., (localmemphis.com) On Monday, Local 24 celebrated its parent company’s, Nexstar Media Group, 23rd Founder’s Day by helping paint classrooms at Brownsville Road Elementary.

Local 24 joined over 150 other Nexstar-owned stations across the country in volunteering in its community.

Brownsville’s administrators told Local 24 they typically need basic resources for its students such as, laundry detergent and food for the weekends. Myosha Holloway was one of the 5th grade teachers to have her room painted, and she was incredibly excited.

Sometimes we don’t get the resources that we need unless someone donates or does something. Holloway said. So, for you all to come out and paint and do all these new things it is always a warm feeling as a teacher because sometimes we feel like we’re doing everything ourselves.

Many students at the school utilize the washer and dryer in the building to wash their clothes. Fourteen 5th and 6th grade classrooms hadn’t been painted in over five years and needed a fresh lift.

Brownsville assistant principal, Velvet Jeter, said she can’t wait for the students to see their freshly painted classrooms in the Fall.

Education is really hard work, Jeter said. So, often times we cannot change the child’s environment at home, but of course we can change the environment at school so that’s why we’re here today, so when kids walk in when school starts back, they have the best environment ever.

Administrators said they still need resources such as paper towels, peanut butter, laundry detergent, and other helpful resources for their students. If you would like to help their school, you can donate items directly at the school.
