Local students celebrated Black History Month and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by showcasing their artwork.

“Art It Out!” was an event in honor of MLK50 that allowed students to paint art Sunday inside of the Oak Court Mall in East Memphis.

Thanks to a grant from the City of Memphis, this is one of several events that will incorporate students’ expressions of what MLK 50 means to them through their art.

Local 24 spoke with one of the coordinators bout how this event came to be.

“It just so happened to tie in without MLK50 events that we needed to do. And we figured this would be a good environment for our children to be able to not only just express themselves through paint, but also to sale some of their paintings and make money off the work they’ll be doing today,” said T’Challa Pollard, Coordinator of Volunteers for SCS.

The students also performed spoken word, made and sold jewelry, and performed songs for guest in the mall as part of the event.
