A Memphis man is behind bars after police say a dice game turned deadly.

It happened about 7:40 p.m. Friday night in the 1400 block of Haywood Avenue. Police say they found Ladarrius Johnson dead, shot several times in the driver’s seat of a car. A second victim was found a short distance away at Steele and Frayser Blvd.

According to the affidavit, the second victim told investigators he was watching his friend, Johnson, shoot dice in front of a home, when Johnson and the suspect Artavious Holmes got into an argument. The second victim and Johnson decided to leave, and as they turned to pass the home in the car, he said Holmes flagged them down. That’s when he said Holmes opened fire into the car, hitting him in the back and Johnson several times. The second victim jumped out of the car and ran, and Johnson died at the scene.

Witnesses told police they saw Holmes shoot into the car, and said Holmes gave the gun to another man who left the scene.

Holmes is charged with first degree murder, attempted first degree murder, employing a firearm during a felony, and being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun.

Police say Holmes has a previous robbery conviction from 2014, in which he served 3 years.

No bond has been set and Holmes is due in court Tuesday.
