The man who was shot while leaving his work at a downtown restaurant is recovering. Two weeks ago, police say two suspects tried to carjack Michael Nelson and shot him in the back.
It happened on Vance near South Main. Nelson is going through physical therapy at Regional One. He was shot in the back, and that bullet pierced his vertebrae. Doctors are not sure if he will walk again, but Nelson remains hopeful. He told Local 24 he’s just thankful he survived the shooting. We talked to him after he finished a round of physical therapy.
Nelson was leaving work at the Green Beetle when he was shot the night of March 21st.
“When the bullet hit me, it punctured a little bit of my lung. Felt that collapsing, I was having trouble breathing, I was having trouble speaking. They kept trying to roll me on my back, I couldn’t breathe. I kept telling them I needed to be on my side or stomach,” says Nelson.
There is a go fund me set up for Nelson and donors have already raised nearly $12,000 of a $15,000 goal. He’s hoping to be discharged from the hospital on April 18th.
Memphis police identified one the suspects as Martemus Gillie. He will be in court Friday for an arraignment.
