Local 24 Storm Team Chief Meteorologist John Bryant is vacationing with his family in Las Vegas. John talked to Local 24’s Tish Clark by phone earlier. She also spoke with a former Memphian who now lives in Vegas.

John and his family are safe. They’re staying at a resort less than a mile from Mandalay Bay, after arriving Saturday.  The trip was supposed to be a birthday celebration for John’s daughter who turned 21 Sunday.

“Right before I laid down to go to bed, I started hearing ambulances outside,” says John. “I think this whole city is still in shock. The environment is just different from what it was yesterday.”

“I guess it was a blessing that I wasn’t find there. You know just thinking about what could’ve happened,” says Greg Mercado. Greg moved to Vegas from Memphis about four years ago. He works at a resort a couple of blocks from Mandalay Bay.

“I had a lot of people in Memphis and all around checking on me to see if I was there,” says Greg. “I checked on my friend who was there and she got away. She was in her hotel room freaking out.”

John says he and his family were tired from traveling and decided to turn in early. A decision he can’t stop thinking about.

“We were outside walking around you know, an hour before it happened,” says John. “It was unnerving to say the least.”

Blood donations are greatly needed. Hundreds of people have been lined up for hours at various locations in Vegas. The wait time to give blood is about 24 hours.

John says he and his family plan to donate before they head home.
